“It’s Not Just Aging” — When Pelvic Floor Symptoms Deserve Attention

One of the most common things I hear from patients is, “I thought this was just part of getting older.” Sometimes it’s said about bladder leakage. Sometimes it’s pelvic pressure or a prolapse sensation. Often it’s a mix of symptoms that have slowly become part of daily life.

I want to be very clear. These issues are common, but they are not something you simply have to accept as aging.

When “Normal” Isn’t Actually Normal

Urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse can develop gradually. At first, symptoms may seem small or easy to explain away:

  • Leaking when you sneeze, laugh, or exercise
  • A feeling of pressure or heaviness in the pelvis
  • The sensation that something has shifted internally
  • Avoiding activities because you’re worried about discomfort or accidents

Many women downplay these symptoms for months or even years. Over time, though, they can become disruptive. They can affect comfort, confidence, sleep, and the ability to participate fully in everyday life.

The Real Impact Goes Beyond Physical Symptoms

These conditions can be debilitating, not only physically, but emotionally and socially.

I have seen patients pull back from things they love because of symptoms they were told were “normal”:

  • Skipping workouts or long walks
  • Avoiding travel or social outings
  • Planning life around restroom access
  • Turning down activities because it feels safer to stay close to home

When symptoms are dismissed as “just aging,” women often delay evaluation and treatment. That delay can mean spending unnecessary time feeling limited or isolated.

You Deserve Answers and Options

At Advanced Women’s Health of NJ, my goal is to change the narrative. You deserve to understand what’s happening in your body, and you deserve a plan that fits your life.

Not every patient needs surgery. Many patients do well with conservative options. Others benefit from advanced treatment. The right approach starts with a thoughtful evaluation, a clear explanation, and a conversation that respects your priorities.

If Symptoms Are Affecting Your Life, It’s Worth a Conversation

If bladder leakage, prolapse symptoms, or pelvic discomfort are interfering with your confidence or routines, I encourage you to get evaluated. Relief is possible, and you do not have to accept these symptoms as your new normal.

You’re not overreacting. You’re not alone. And this is not something you have to “just live with.”
