The Advantage of 3D Visualization in da Vinci Robotic Surgery

At Advanced Women’s Health of NJ, we know that understanding the technology behind a procedure can help women feel more informed and confident about their care options.

One important difference between traditional laparoscopy and da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery is how the surgeon sees the anatomy.

Traditional laparoscopy: a flat view

In traditional laparoscopy, the surgeon views the surgical field on a flat video monitor. That 2D image can provide useful information, but it does not offer the same sense of depth as a three-dimensional view.

da Vinci surgery: magnified 3D visualization

The da Vinci system provides surgeons with a crystal-clear, magnified 3D view of the anatomy. This enhanced depth perception is critical for delicate dissections in the confined spaces of the pelvis.

In urogynecology and pelvic surgery, that level of visualization matters. The pelvic area is complex, and procedures often require careful work around delicate structures. A magnified 3D view supports precise control during those steps.

Important Safety Information

Serious complications may occur in any surgery, including injury to tissues/organs, bleeding, or infection. Risks of minimally invasive surgery include longer operative time or the need to convert to an open approach. Patients should consult with their doctor to determine if robotic surgery is appropriate for their specific characteristics and condition.
